Whole venous blood from human volunteers was exposed to 50 Hz ELF at 500 uT for 2, 4 or 24 hours. Concurrent sham exposed primary blood cultures were placed in the same temperature controlled environment where the lowest stray magnetic field was measured (~1.3 uT). Temperature was maintained at 37 degrees. Positive controls included ionizing radiation (60Co; 4Gy). DNA breaks in lymphocytes were assessed via comet assay at 0, 30, 60, 120 and 240 minutes after ELF exposure or 4 Gy. Comets were analyzed with the Komet 4.0 (Kinetic Imaging, Ltd, UK) image analysis system for tail DNA (tail factor %), and visual scoring (classifying in 5 groups). Start date February 2003, end date December 2004. |
