Model 3.1 GHz (PW) exposure to rabbits and analysis of retinal damage

Rabbit retina were exposed to 3100 MHz (PW) at a power density of 55 mW/cm2 and examined for degenerative changes in the retinal neurons. Exposures were administered either a single time for 1 to 1.5 hours, or as multiple exposures of 1 to 1.5 hours for a total of ~53 hours over the course of ~100 days. The authors report that exposure depleted neurons of cytoplasmic constituents, they often contained "phago-lysosomal structures with myelin bodies", and there were "many degenerating synaptic boutons". Glial cells displayed reactive changes. A single microwave exposure followed by an induced 70-100% blood-pressure increase did not enhance blood-retina barrier permeability to tracers. There was no evidence of blood brain barrier leakage. The authors report the rabbit eye can be affected by microwave radiation at intensities lower than previously reported. In other studies, the effects of microwave radiation on microtubules and axonal transport was evaluated.
