ELF exposures from the environment and effects on hypersensitive vs. control subjects in terms of immune function |
Details |
|
Peripheral blood cells from self proclaimed ELF electromagnetic hypersensitive and control women in Italy were evaluated and compared with estimated environmental EMF exposure levels. In vitro stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells with phytohaemoglutinin (PHA), NK CD16(+)-CD56+ lymphocytes, and interferon-gamma (both spontaneously and in presence of PHA) was reduced in both hypersensitive and control women that had higher environmental ELF exposures, although the greatest change was in hypersensitive subjects. Hypersensitive women with ELF exposures also had higher levels of serum IgE. The authors suggest that ELF may reduce blood cytotoxic activity and have a greater effect on hypersensitive subpopulations. |
