Model 8 Hz pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) exposure to control and ovariectomized rats and analysis of endpoints associated with osteoarthritis
Details

Sprague Dawley rats (n = 50) were exposed to 8 Hz (pulsed) at an H-field strength of 3.8 x 10(-10) A/m for 20, 40, or 60 min/day for 30 days and analyzed for bone mineral density in the femur at 30 days after exposure. The authors report that in ovariectomized rats, exposures reversed normal hypotrichosis, hypoactivity and listlessness. Exposures were also able to maintain normal bone mineral density in ovariectomized rats. In a subsequent publication, control and ovariectomized rats were exposed to 8 Hz pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) for 30 days and evaluated for measures associated with osteoarthritis. The authors report increased estrogen levels and decreased chondrocyte apoptosis and metalloproteinases-13 expression in knee joint cartilage of exposed animals, suggesting PEMF as a treatment.
