Model 1800 MHz(GSM) exposure to mouse primary astrocytes + pig brain capillary endothelial cells and analysis of sucrose permeability (in vitro BBB model)
Details

Astrocytes from neonatal rat brain and porcine brain capillary endothelial cells were co-cultured to simulate brain and examine the effects of RF on blood brain barrier. Cultures were exposed to 1.8 GHz (GSM) RF for 4 days at an average SAR of 0.3 W/kg (0.46 W/kg peak) in a rectangular waveguide. During the exposure period, permeability was examined at various time points during the 4 day exposure period by morphological analysis, electron microscopy (close apposition of cells, lack of intracellular clefts), immunocytochemistry (zona occludens protein leakage), and 14C-sucrose leakage. The authors report that exposure significantly increased the permeability of 14C-sucrose across the endothelial cell boundry (using data from 16 exposed and 9 control cultures; p < 0.001) Infra red thermometry of the culture samples was used to verify that the temperature increases due to exposure were not significant.
