Isolated bacterial DALM (diazoluminomelanin) and the related polymer pDAT (poly-diazotyrosine) generate temperature-dependent thermochemiluminescence when irradiated with microwaves. DALM and pDAT were exposed to MW from an FPS-7B radar (1.25 GHz PW- 5.73 used pulse duration, 10 pulses/sec) at SARs of 320 - 570 W/kg. DALM and pDAT solutions produced flashes and audible pops, although not with every MW pulse. The pops and flashes occurred simultaneously and were correlated in intensity. Flashes originated from hot spot areas in the meniscus of the liquid sample. The authors conclude that pulsed MW energy can be stored within certain types of biochemical redox reactions and be emitted as sound and light discharges. This phenomenon opens up the possibility of a MW bioeffect mechanism unique to pulsed MW. In other studies, bacteria normally producing the microwave-absorbing polymer (DALM) were more easily killed by exposure to 2450 MHz (PW) MW at 100 W/kg than bacteria without DALM. |
