Model 20 KHz exposure to rats and analysis of cancer (DMBA-initiated mammary, Benze Pyrene-initiated lung, TPA-initiated skin tumor bioassays)
Details

Sprague Dawley (female) rats were exposed to 20 kHz (frequency emitted from TV and PC monitors) at 6.25 uT (regulated exposure limit of magnetic field for the public in Korea). Mammary tumors were initially produced in female Sprague-Dawley rats by oral intubation of dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA, 50 mg/kg), lung tumors in ICR mice by scapular region injection of benzo(a)pyrene (BP), and skin tumors in female ICR mice by topical application of DMBA and tetradecanoylphorbolester (TPA). Exposure to 20 kHz was applied 8 hrs/day for 14 weeks after the next day of DMBA treatment for mammary tumor experiment, for 6 weeks after weaning for lung tumors, and for 20 weeks after 1 week of DMBA application for the skin tumor study. TPA was applied once a week for 19 weeks. Results showed no significant differences in tumor incidence, mean tumor number and volume, or histological patterns between 20 kHz exposed and sham control rats in the above 3 tumor models. The authors conclude that there is no significant tumorigenic or co-tumorigenic effects of 20 kHz triangular magnetic field exposure at 6.25 uT in the murine mammary, lung and skin models used in this study.
